In my middle school, everyone learned that the lead character in “The Call of the Wild,” Buck, is a dynamic progressive character. It was the way we were taught to write a standard five paragraph essay. That worked wonderfully (except for those of us who tried to insist that Buck was a retrogressive character), and it points to the import of connecting with the dog at the center of the story.
The new filmic version of the tale, which is out on Blu-ray today, offers up a CG dog in a world of live-action humans and that choice–that choice that was made early on–stops the audience from feeling an attachment to Buck. Today’s podcast ruminates on that choice and its aftermath.
