Mysteries are great.  Suspense and scares are great.  There is no reason why every little thing happening in a film has to be explained.  There is no reason why we have to understand exactly how the horror in a horror movie comes about.  We need not always know the origins of the evil.

Heck, we don’t even need for characters to act in their own self interest in a moment of crisis.  People regularly do the wrong thing at such times.  What we do need, what it is not asking too much to see, is for characters to act in their own self-interest in moments of calm.
