NCIS: Los Angeles – The Review

One of the things that makes the original NCIS a great show is its ability to deftly blend comedy with its dramatic storylines.  The characters on the series aren't just investigators, they're… well… characters.  That alone truly sets NCIS apart from CBS' glut of procedural dramas.  Why then the new NCIS spinoff, NCIS: Los Angeles would opt to tone down the one thing that makes NCIS different is a little hard to explain.

Several weeks ago I wrote about watching the backdoor pilot for NCIS: LA, the two-part NCIS episode “Legend.”  I said that the characters showed potential to be interesting, but that until I screened an actual episode of the new series it would be impossible to truly judge it based solely on the backdoor pilot.

Having now watched a full episode of NCIS: LA it appears quite certain that while the show fits perfectly into CBS' procedural drama bread-and-butter milieu, the show almost wholly lacks the quirkiness which makes NCIS so palatable.  Gone is the hard-nosed elder statesman and leader of the NCIS team, Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), and in his place, are G. Callen (Chris O'Donnell) and Sam Hanna (LL Cool J).  While both men are fine actors, they seem to have been cast more for their looks and potential 18-49 demographic appeal than for what they can truly bring to the roles.

Humor is brought to the table, mainly by the addition of Linda Hunt to the cast.  She plays Henrietta “Hetty” Lange, and runs the NCIS: LA division, which, even though Rocky Carroll appears as Director Vance from time to time, puts her more in the Vance role on NCIS than the Gibbs one.  There are other people in the cast who seem as though they'll bring an element of humor to the proceedings as well, but they all remain secondary – or tertiary – to O'Donnell and LL's characters and therefore the humor remains subdued at best.

Instead of humor, the show seems to offer a “more is better” type of philosophy which just ends up playing out as a “more is more” one.  In addition to having more gunfights, the show, very interestingly, has more still shots heading into and out of commercial.  Though they weren't present initially on NCIS, a hallmark of the show has become a still (or nearly still) black and white image being shown upon returning from a commercial break, and the show progresses over the course of that act until it arrives at that image.  NCIS: LA doesn't use just one image, instead opting for an excessive series of them, all of which (it seems) occur at some point during the act.  As with the casting of O'Donnell and LL Cool J, it seems like a deliberate choice on the part of the producers to try and “liven” things up and, hopefully, play towards a younger audience.

On the plus side, the overabundance of technology I noted in “Legend” has been greatly minimized.  There are still fancy computers which can do impossible things present, but the technology in the premiere takes a backseat to the characters, something that wasn't the case in “Legend.”

NCIS: Los Angeles might be a massive success for the network – they do procedural crime shows better than anyone and have a great track record in recent years with them – but that doesn't necessarily make it a good show. The problem is simply that NCIS: LA  appears to be yet another in a long line of such dramas on the network and with little to differentiate it from them.  Yes, this may be the only show CBS has that is located in Los Angeles and features members of the NCIS Office of Special Projects who like to go undercover at the drop of a hat, but that's not really enough.

Me, I'm going to stick with Jethro Gibbs and company this fall rather than hopping over to LA.

NCIS: Los Angeles premieres September 22 at 9:00pm on CBS.

  1. I love the original NCIS but I was left disappointed with the spin off, NCIS LA. Not only are the notable character traits gone with LA but also missing is the science and forensics that made the original NCIS so very interesting.

If the writers were to incorporate the lab and ME roles, along with the autopsy and crime scene investigation that NCIS does, I beleive that this series would truly soar.

If not, then it is only a humorist version of CSI with a little “Beverly Hills 90210” thrown in and very little “crime show” genre that NCIS and CSI are famous for.

  2. Seriously, does anyone buy “Hetty” as the leader of a law enforcement group? What a joke. And really, do you think a small substation of the main NCIS office is going to have all of the latest and greatest technology? I sure hope they make drastic changes or I'll just be sticking to the original. And NO one can replace ABBY!

  3. omg i kept wanting to turn it off but it was mesmorizing to watch because i could'nt figure out if it was really happening. this was like watching “night rider” or “the dukes of hazzard” being shown today like they were serious. if this lasts more than three weeks, god bless us all. this is “three's company” cheesy, but meant to be serious. mark harmn and the other cast must be absolutely rolling and laughing but downright embarrassed as well that their show has the same first 4 letters. this is the first time i've ever blogged and do not know if anyone will ever read this but i could'nt help myself. i feel like i had to at least comment on the fact that if the tv people, stars, producers, or whoever researched this put it together or had anything to do with this piece of “work?” thought that it was in any way what people would watch well i am wordless. btw i thought it was scary funny in the worst way if u didn't get that.

  4. yeah I agree that there is no humor so far, I found that the longer I watched NCIS LA the more I really missed Dinoso, Gibbs, McGee and most of all Abby with their quirky and funny banter amongst each other. I didn't even finish NCIS LA,I turned it off so I could watch the original

  7. I too love the original NCIS and I liked the pilot of NCIS:Special Ops. This show could have been fresh and entertaining. With special operations that could have taken place any where…

Unfortunately somebody decided to make it NCIS:LA where there is no Navy Base and turned them into regular cops who don't show their badge? Huh?

This show could have really been good, now it's a land-locked wanna be that tries to incorporate pieces from other shows – and does a pretty boring job of it.

After we watched the season opener we decided that it wasn't worth our time… so then they advertised that this weeks episodes would include some NCIS regulars…. so we gave it a second chance.

I watched the “fit in” of Abby last night – where she had to do an emergency evaluation of splatter marks and then they sort of forgot about her until later when she said – aha it was the lamp with smudged finger prints… huh?

Then we have Vance brought in to pursue yet another La Grenouille type vendetta… been there done that…

Add to that the highlites from many other cop shows. Like the lip reading, psychic/observation skills, Starsky and Hutch, gratuitous gun firing from cops who don't carry badges and bystanders who don't ask questions or show alarm etc, etc.

Lastly the much vaunted technology, where they all huddle around the smart board expanding and throwing around pictures…. and I won't get into the whole … every video camera in LA has a hard drive that is easily accessible with high def resolution to boot….

Lastly – the comedy, or lack there of… what is currently there doesn't work, nor is there any comradeship/synergy between the team members…. it all just doesn't work and should be left to die.

    Nice idea – terrible implementation.

  9. As I watch the NCIS LA I notice there is something wrong or different. Ha!!!! I found it. they are Professional Federal Employees who don't like to dress. The clothes they wear are good for street hoods but not for Federal Agents. Especially Naval agents. On NCIS everyboedy wears, on occsion, the NCIS hats and jackets. Nicely dressed and very professional. I know it is LA but they are Federal agents, and give them badges.

  10. The only reason anyone could be mesmerized by NCIS is that they are puzzled why such a truly awful show could survive, even on what is probably the worst season in TV history. NCIS is in reality a sitcom, the dialogue is lame, the characters are one-dimensional and wooden, and the over-acting is nauseating. To have left NCIS and CSI Miami on the box, and cancelled an immeasurably superior show like Without a Trace just demonstrates the idiocy of those responsible.

  15. Somehow I keep forgetting all about this show, and then once I remember it, I can’t figure out how I could have ever forgotten about it in the first place. It’s one of, if not my favorite police procedural show out there, and LL Cool J is great in it. So I’ve been busy catching up on NCIS LA. Lucky for me being a long time customer of DISH Network (and employee these days too) I know about dishonline(dot)com. It’s this great free streaming site with thousands of shows and movies, including NCIS LA. It’s also great to browse because I’ve found a few shows, (like Athena the Goddess of War) that were great, that I probably wouldn’t have even heard of without the service. It’s definitely worth a few minutes to check out, especially considering non-dish customers are free to check out a good deal of the programming too.
